ExtremeCloud IQ Instant Port

Image
Instant Port enables you to automate your access layer by dynamically assigning VLANs based on the end devices MAC and/or LLDP capabilities. This document will cover the configuration of instant port and show an example.   Configuration of Instant Port is simple. First, create an Instant Port Profile within your network policy then assign that profile to your Switch Template.   ·          The Non-Forwarding VLAN will be used by default to learn the MAC and LLDP capabilities of the end device. ·          The Default Port Type will be used if you wish to provide non-matching devices layer two connectivity. ·          You can choose whether to allow non-matching devices to use either the Default Port Type or the Non-Forwarding VLAN. By using the Non-Forwarding VLAN, unknown devices will be dropped in an unused VLAN without the ability to reach other ...

Hamina Crash Course Video

Image
45 minute crash course in using Hamina. The skills learned here can be transferable to other wireless design tools as well. Let me know what you think! This is the longest video I've made so far and I hope it can help new/aspiring engineers get comfortable with wireless design tools. Wow this post got some traction and shares on Linkedin! I'm relieved the community is welcoming of new amateur creators!! https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7168416689007644672/

My First WLPC!

Image
I was able to attend WLPC for the first time this year! I have to say the experience was amazing and I was able to meet many of the people who helped me become a wireless engineer. I ran into several CWNEs that I knew from my time at Walmart so it was great to get to see them again. I got to thank some of them for their amazing blog posts that helped me get a deeper understanding of wireless.     Since I'm with Extreme I got to go with several of the incredibly talented folks from the company, even David Coleman, who's CWNA book is a huge reason I'm in the position I'm in now. Many other experts who helped me along the way like Peter Mackenzie and his incredible troubleshooting/design videos I've watched from old WLPC recordings.     Extreme hosted an evening event and I got to help show off their mobile companion app for configuration and onboarding.        My deep dive was on Wi-Fi 7. We reviewed how the technology works and ...

Super Bowl Rogue Hunting

Image
Second From Left 😉 This was an incredible opportunity. I got to run around the concourse hunting rogue APs with an AirCheck. I was able to find one in a media pressbox while they were covering pre-event they day of the Super Bowl. Luckily they were not on air when I found it. They were running a Linksys AP on a 40MHz channel! It was easy to track down with the AirCheck and external antenna. Something that blew my mind was the noise floor of this stadium. It was a Cisco designed stadium and the floor sat around -80 when no fans were present in the stands, and as high as -71 during the event! Thinking of typical wireless design I'm used to seeing floors in the -90s so seeing a noise floor of -71 is 100 times worse! (Rules of 10s and 3s). I would regularly see an SNR of 5-10dB and MCS rates of less than 50Mbps. I didn't realize the incredible challenges of designing a wireless network for the largest sporting event in the US. Under seat APs in the stands and overhead in the conco...

Wi-Fi Design Process Video

Here's a demonstration of how to use Instant Port in ExtremeCloud IQ. A post about wired networking on a wireless blog 😉 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGRNUCoWVrw

Following Design Processes

It is important to use proper design methodology when designing wireless networks. WiFi has evolved numerous times since it was first implemented, yet I still see very outdated or flat out wrong ways of designing a wireless network. The biggest thing I find is that many places do not follow the design process when choosing to install a new or update an existing WLAN. Essentially we are throwing hardware at a design problem and expecting it to work. In this post, I'll cover the proper way to design a wireless network according to CWNP's guidance. Thank you CWDP-303 official study guide from CWNP for providing me with the ability to do so!  Define     This might be one of the most overlooked parts of the design process. This step in the process sets the foundation for a good, well thought out design. Instead of simply getting a floor plan and jumping straight into a network planner, let's understand who or what we are designing for. During this stage, meeting ...
